Course Description:
Budapest, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, has a diverse historical, architectural and cultural heritage. Explore the diversity of Budapest by visiting historical sites, and experiencing the food and culture of Hungary.
This study group will strive to include students with diverse backgrounds, learning differences, and diverse needs. Students with learning differences represent a growing population at McDaniel. The purpose of this study trip is to encourage students with learning differences to experience the diversity of Budapest through a series of activities that respond to, and facilitate their unique learning style. A major goal is to increase confidence and strengthen personal identity, flexibility, and creativity.
The faculty leader for this study trip must provide final approval for all registered students to participate. By registering for this class you agree to allow the Office of Student Affairs to review and approve your student record along with the faculty instructor of the class. Enrollment in this class is not final until Student Affairs and the faculty instructor for the class approve your registration.
Course Objectives:
- Study diverse social, historical and cultural society of Budapest
- Examine perspectives and customs of non-American culture
- Develop understanding of the world beyond the U.S., provide opportunities in and out of the classroom for students to develop into critical, sensitive, respectful, and compassionate global citizens
- Focus on multi-cultural travel experience, as well as a multi-cultural approach to the inclusion of diverse students; defined by race, gender, sexuality, class, religion, disability, etc.
- Encourage students to challenge barriers that have kept them from previous participation in study abroad. Reaching outside ones comfort zone to experience change and unfamiliar circumstances will provide a unique opportunity for development of self-awareness and appreciation of diversity.
Itinerary:
Day 1: McDaniel Campus, Westminster, Orientation
Day 2: Trip preparation and travel
Day 3: Travel, hotel check-in, dinner/welcome reception by McDaniel Budapest
Day 4: Metro orientation, (# 2 tram), Chain Bridge, Parliament, the Danube
Day 5: Castle Hill District: Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion, Mathias Church
Day 6: Szentendre by train, Tesco shopping for dinner
Day 7: Hungarian National Museum
Day 8: Budapest Market, City Exploration, Hungarian National Opera
Day 9: Budapest Caves
Day 10: Andrassy Ut, Heroes Square, Schezeny Baths
Day 11: Pecs by Train
Day 12: Gellert Hill, the Citadel, The Great Synagogue
Day 13: Travel Home
Day 14: Closure Experience
