College Web Policy

The purpose of the McDaniel College Web site is to support the educational mission of the College.

Page Types

McDaniel College web servers host three categories of Web pages: “official” pages, “course-related” pages, and “non-official” pages.

·      An official page is one that communicates official information about the College or one of its programs or offices, and is maintained by Communications and Marketing in partnership with an academic department or administrative office.   These pages are subject to the templates provided within the Content Management System (CMS) and should adhere to the McDaniel College Style Guide.

o   Location of pages:  www.mcdaniel.edu

·      A course-related Web page or site is one that supports one or more courses at the College. Web pages and Web sites associated with a course are controlled by the faculty member who teaches the course and are not subject to approval by Communications and Marketing.  These pages are not subject to the templates provided within the CMS; however, the faculty can use the CMS to publish course-related pages to www2.mcdaniel.edu if they so choose.

o   Location of pages: Blackboard, www2.mcdaniel.edu or co-located servers related to a specific course.

·      A non-official page is any page that is not an official or course-related page. Examples of non-official pages are personal pages, student-created sites, and the sites of student organizations. Non-official pages are not reviewed by Communications and Marketing. These pages are not subject to the templates provided within the CMS, however, students, faculty and staff can use the CMS to publish course-related pages to www2.mcdaniel.edu and student.mcdaniel.edu if they so choose.

o   Location of pages: www2.mcdaniel.edu and student.mcdaniel.edu

Responsibilities

The Campus Technology Committee (CTC) is responsible for:

·      The implementation and administration of the McDaniel College Web Policy.

·      The CTC is responsible for developing style, standards and review procedures for official College web pages.

Communications and Marketing/Web Manager is responsible for:

·      Developing and conducting training sessions on how to manage website content within the Content Management System (CMS)

·      The issuance of system IDs allowing access to changing content within the CMS

·      Troubleshooting the CMS

·      Supporting faculty and staff who wish to create course-related or non-official pages using the CMS

Information Technology (IT) is responsible for:

·      Keeping the www2.mcdaniel.edu and student.mcdaniel.edu servers up and running

·      Supporting faculty, staff and students who wish to create “course-related “ or non-official pages that are not created using the CMS:

Visual Identity

In order to reinforce a strong and unified visual identity for the College, Web developers for official College pages should follow the McDaniel College Style Guide. In addition, McDaniel College adheres to the latest edition of The AP Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law (With Internet Guide and Glossary).

Copyright

·      All materials produced by McDaniel College personnel on official pages of the McDaniel College Web site are protected by copyright.

·      The McDaniel College name, seal, wordmark, and other official images are property of the College, and should follow the guidelines set forth in the Visual Identity Manual (http://www.mcdaniel.edu/news_509.htm).

·      Copyrighted material may not be used on a McDaniel College Web page without permission of the copyright owner.

·      Persons uploading content and graphics to a McDaniel Web page are responsible for ensuring that copyrights are respected.

Content and Links

·      The McDaniel College Web site contains links that allow visitors to access other Web sites that are not controlled by the College. Such links are provided as a convenience and do not imply endorsement by the College. McDaniel College assumes no responsibility or liability for any material on these links, and expressly disclaims any responsibility for the contents of any linked site.

·      McDaniel College reserves the right to refuse to offer a link on an official College Web page, or to remove a link without notice.

·      McDaniel College does not permit Web posting of content that is illegal, that violates license rights or other contractual agreements, or that violates the privacy rights of any individual. For information regarding restrictions on programs, software, and full-text, statistical, bibliographic, and other databases licensed to McDaniel College, please contact the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.

·      McDaniel College reserves the right to reject or remove from any McDaniel College Web server materials that are outdated, erroneous or misleading, illegal, unethical, or detrimental to the mission and operations of the College.

·      McDaniel College students, faculty and staff members are expected to comply with the McDaniel College Computer Use Policy.

Visitors

·      Visitors to the McDaniel College Web site may not post or transmit information or materials that violate the rights of any third party; that contain known destructive or harmful components; that contain threatening, abusive, or obscene images or language; or that are otherwise illegal.

·      The College reserves the right, without notice, to remove material or edit messages received from visitors to the Web site. McDaniel College expressly disclaims responsibility for materials submitted to the College or posted in chat rooms or bulletin boards, including contents of personal or unofficial Web pages.

·      Visitors to the McDaniel College Web site may not modify, delete or otherwise tamper with any information or materials on the Web site.

·      Visitors to the McDaniel College Web site may not unlawfully use, reverse engineer or reproduce any of the software, copyrighted material, trade secrets or other proprietary information contained or used on the Web site.

·      McDaniel College makes no representations regarding the accuracy or completeness of the McDaniel College Web site. The site is provided “as is” without any warranty.

·      McDaniel College may add, change, delete or update materials on the Web site without notice.

·      The College does not guarantee that the Web site will be available continuously.

·      Visitors may use the Web site, but by using it, release the College from all claims.

·      The College reserves the right to change the Web policy at any time without notice.
