McDaniel's Class of 2014 represents an impressive array of diversity, scholarship and leadership. Many are among the first in their families to attend college, while others have logged hundreds of hours performing community service in their hometowns.

Here are Five Freshmen Facts that help paint a picture of McDaniel’s Class of 2014:

• Two-thirds performed community service and half held leadership roles during their high school years.
• 40 percent are the first in their families to attend college.
• 41 percent come from out-of-state.
• The Class of 2014 represents 24 states stretching from Washington state to California to Florida to Maine.
• They hail from six countries: Guatemala, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Senegal and Vietnam.

In McDaniel tradition, an army of upper-classmen volunteers pitched in to help the Class of 2014 get settled into Whiteford and Rouser halls on Move In Day. This year’s freshmen also were treated to an extra set of helping hands: McDaniel’s new president, Roger Casey, carried dozens of boxes jammed with the comforts of home, and more than the occasional flat-screen TV.

During a rousing Convocation address later on Move-In Day, Casey implored members of the Class of 2014 to seize every opportunity on the Hill to learn, grow and lead – and to teach him something along the way. You can watch the entire Convocation address on YouTube.
