The Phi Beta Kappa chapter of McDaniel College presents its Visiting Scholar lecture, “Slavery and Its Aftermath in the United States,” at 8 p.m. March 23 on campus in McDaniel Lounge.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
This year's visiting scholar is Stanley L. Engerman, John H. Munro Professor of Economics and Professor of History at the University of Rochester in New York since 1984. He is the co-author of “Time on the Cross: The Economics of American Negro Slavery,” which earned the Bancroft Prize in American History. He has been editor and co-editor of numerous books, including “The Reinterpretation of American Economic History.”
Engerman will discuss the factors in the development of slavery and its economic and social impact upon both slaves and white southerners. He will examine the debates about abolition and discuss the impact of freedom upon black income and wealth, education, and family patterns in addition to the developments in white racial attitudes.
The analysis will include the effects of the Northward Movement after 1910 and the expansion of the Civil Rights movement after World War II.
McDaniel College is one of only 270 colleges nationwide with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter.
