Katherine Leidy Unger’s more than $3.5-million-dollar bequest, earmarked for Hoover Library, is among the largest ever received by McDaniel College. The 1932 graduate wrote that the College “afforded me special opportunities" during the Depression, and she wanted to show her appreciation.

Mrs. Unger majored in English and history here at the College. She and husband W. Byers Unger ’20, lived for decades in New Hampshire, where he taught zoology at Dartmouth College. The couple relished college life, frequently entertaining Dartmouth students in their home. They traveled extensively, to all 50 states and abroad.

Mr. Unger died in 1975, and Mrs. Unger in 2004.
