Scholarships for Study Abroad
If you are a resident of the state of Maryland, you may apply for a Study Abroad Scholarship offered by the State.  The application form can be found on line on the following site of the Maryland International Education Association:

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad for up to one academic year. The program aims to diversify the kinds of student who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. The program serves students who have been under-represented in study abroad which includes but is not limited to: students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, students attending minority-serving institutions, and students with disabilities. The Gilman Program seeks to assist students from a diverse range and type of two-year and four-year public and private institutions from all 50 states.

A limited number of $3000 Critical Need Language Supplements are available for students studying a critical need language for a total possible award of $8000. A list of eligible languages can be found on the Gilman website at http://www.iie.org/gilman.

Eligibility: Students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba.

The Gilman International Scholarship Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education.

American – Scandinavian Fellowship  (http://www.amscan.org/ )
The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships (up to $23,000) and grants (normally $5,000) to individuals to pursue research or study for a well-defined research or study project that makes a stay in Scandinavia essential. Applicants must have completed their undergraduate education by the start of the project. Priority is given to candidates at the graduate level for dissertation-related study or research.

Boren Fellowships  (http://www.borenawards.org/boren_fellowship )
Funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), Boren Fellowships are available to U.S. graduate students studying or conducting research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interest, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.  Boren Fellows study less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Swahili.

Funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), Boren Scholarships are available to U.S. undergraduate students studying in world regions critical to U.S. interests or studying less commonly taught languages including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project accepts applications from American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award 100 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan. Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year programs). Students studying in Japan on summer programs are not eligible to apply.

BUTEX Scholarship  (http://www.butex.ac.uk/?q=node/12 )
BUTEX (British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association) offers scholarships for students currently registered at an institution in the USA or Canada. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad or exchange student at a UK university which is a member of BUTEX for at least one semester. The value of each scholarship is £500 and will be paid to the recipients once they have arrived and registered at their host university.

Critical Language Scholarship Program  (https://clscholarship.org/home.php )
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program offers fully funded intensive summer language institutes overseas in critical need foreign languages for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master's and Ph.D students. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. The CLS Program does not have any government service requirement upon completion, however, it is expected that participants will continue to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their future academic and professional careers.

DAAD grants for study and research in Germany are available to faculty and students from Canada and the United States. Scholars participate in a wide variety of academic activities to promote international academic relations and cooperation.

DiversityAbroad.com Study Abroad Scholarships   (http://www.diversityabroad.com/scholarships )
DiversityAbroad.com has partnered with several organizations to offer study abroad grants and scholarships. Scholarships are only available for students studying or interning abroad on programs offered by a Diversity Abroad member organization. Economically disadvantaged students, African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic/Latino and Native-American students are strongly encouraged to apply.

National Welsh American Foundation  (http://www.wales-usa.org/ )
The NWAF offers a scholarship provided through the Lloyd Family Travel Scholarship fund. Scholarship awards are up to $1,000 to cover travel to Wales and expenses incurred in undertaking studies related to Welsh American history and culture. St. Andrew Society of Washington D.C.  (http://www.saintandrewsociety.org/applications.htm )
The St. Andrew Society of Washington D.C. awards the Donald Malcolm MacArthur Scholarship of $2,500 to an American student studying in Scotland. Students do not need to be a member of this society to apply, but must be a resident in the Mid-Atlantic region and be of Scottish descent. There are multiple chapters of the St. Andrew Society for those that do not reside in the Mid-Atlantic region.
