One faculty member takes the reins of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, while others publish books, articles and music, speak at national conferences and win awards. The following honors were recently achieved by McDaniel faculty, staff, and students.
Philosophy/Religious Studies Professor Greg Alles published an e-article titled “Economy” in the electronic journal Rever (revista de Estudios da Religiao, 2005). He also gave a presentation at the University of Vermont titled “Can Behavioral Economics Explain Religion?”
Associate Music Professor Robin Armstrong was a featured presenter in a doctoral seminar on Feminist Theory and Pedagogy in Musicology at the University of Florida in February.
Music Lecturer Garth Baxter has had two new compositions published through Les Productions D’OZ: “Two Songs of Reflection” (for voice and guitar) and “To Aegir” (for four guitars). Several of his other works are currently being performed at Shenandoah Conservatory, by the Masterworks Choral of Carroll County, and by the Children’s Choir of Carroll County.
Director of Multicultural Services Zephia Bryant was named co-chair of the Washington Regional Task Force against campus prejudice.
Assistant Education Professor Sharon Craig, Education Professional Development Schools (PDS) Liaison Gay Jewell Love ’77 and Graduate and Professional Studies Coordinator Sue Travetto gave a presentation at the National PDS Conference in Orlando titled “PDS Support for Active Inquiry: Conducting an Early Literacy Case Study in a PDS Setting.” Sue was also part of another team presentation titled “Using the Maryland PDS Assessment Framework to Influence Practice,” with colleagues from the Maryland State Department of Education and Salisbury University.
Foreign Languages Professor Tom Deveny published an article: “Narrative Voice in ‘El embrujo de Shanghai’: Novel, Promise, Film” in Letras peninsulares. He also presented a paper in Spain a few months ago: “La pelota vasca: la dialectica contra la pared” at the VI Congreso Internacionalde Literatura Espanola Contemporanea. Universidade da Coruna.
Biology major Rachel Dickey ’07 attended the Benthic Ecology Meeting 2006 in Quebec City, where she won third prize for her poster "Material Strength Variation in the Intertidal Seaweed [Mastocarpus Papillatus]."
Education Professor Skip Fennell will ascend this month from president-elect to president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics for a two-year term and will officially become the president at the conclusion of the NCTM Annual Conference in St. Louis on April 29. The Annual Conference should have an attendance of about 20,000 mathematics educators from North America and around the world. During spring break, Fennell delivered the second annual Richards Andrews Lecture in the University of Missouri - College of Education on the subject “Highly Qualified Teachers: What does this mean?” He is also featured in the January issue of Teaching pre K-8 in an article titled “All the President’s Math.”
Ellen Gulya ’05 was selected as McDaniel College’s 2006 Distinguished Teacher Candidate Honoree through the Maryland Association of Teacher Educators. Gulya completed her certification program this past December and is currently in a long-term substitute position in kindergarten at Charles Carroll Elementary School.
Associate Education Professor Mona Kerby has been appointed to serve on an advisory panel for the National Children’s Museum in Washington, D.C.
Christine Malkiewicz ’07 was presented with the 2006 Bachelor in Social Work Student of the Year Award. The annual award is given by the National Association of Social Workers (Maryland chapter) for outstanding service to the community. Malkiewicz serves as the undergraduate student representative for the Board of Directors for the National Association of Social Workers, Maryland Chapter.
English Professor Kathy Mangan and Assistant Foreign Languages Professor Amy McNichols will represent McDaniel at the Wye Faculty Seminar at Wye River in July to explore the seminar topic “Leadership and Citizenship.”
Foreign Languages Professor Martine Motard-Noar, Associate Foreign Languages Professor Colette Henriette and Foreign Languages Lecturer Cathy Bodin welcomed about 35 Carroll County high school students of French who last month took the Grand Concours, a national French test sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. McDaniel is the only site that offers this test in the area.
Physics Professor Bill Pagonis co-authored a book published last month from Springer: “Numerical and Practical Exercises in Thermoluminescence.” Co-authors are Dr. George Kitis of the University of Thessaloniki-Greece and Dr. Claudio Furetta from the University of Rome. The book is a graduate-level textbook in the field of thermoluminescence.
Assistant Communication Professor Jonathan Slade won 2006 Community Media Center board member of the year, after holding a live TV auction, which raised more than $5,000 for educational broadcasting in Carroll County. The award reads “In grateful appreciation for role as chair of live televised auction.” Slade will be attending the 2006 Jessie Ball duPont Fund Summer Seminars at the National Humanities Center this coming June for a seminar “Turning Literature into Film: The Poetics and Politics of Adaptation.”
