Q: What is computer science?
A: Computer science is a study of problem-solving using algorithms.
It encompasses a variety of topics, some of which overlap with disciplines of mathematics, logic, linguistics, philosophy, and engineering.

Q: I am not good at mathematics. Should I major in Computer Science?
A: The major requirements include a strong mathematical component.
In addition, quantitative reasoning and mathematical rigor are stressed throughout the computer science curriculum. You might consider minor in computer science, which is less mathematically demanding.

Q. What courses should I take in my first semester? 
A. CSC1106 (Computing Fundamentals I) and CSC/MAT2207 (Discrete
Mathematics) are two gateway courses for computer science program, you should take one (or both) of them during the first semester and plan to have both of them taken by the end of the first year.

A. CSC 1106. If your interest grows, you should consider a minor in computer science.

Q. What kinds of jobs do graduates who majored in computer science have?
A. Computer science is a new major at McDaniel. In general, most graduates with computer science major find jobs as software developers (computer programers), some continue they studies in graduate school.

Q. Does this department sponsor any special programs or internships?
A. There are positions available in Information Services for some computer science majors.

Q. How can I decide if I might like computer science?
A. If you are introvert, good at organizing your thoughts, and like to solve problems, you should take the introductory course (CSC1106) to see if you are interested.

Q. Do I need any special computer equipment for Computer Science courses?
A. No, you should be able to do all programming assignments at the department computer lab equipment with recent models of Apple computers.

Q. How can I major in computer science and complete a minor in education?
A. At the present time the state of Maryland has no specific requirements for certification in computer science. Consult with someone in the education department.
