McDaniel College is offering free fall semester tuition for students whose institutions in Louisiana are closed. Two students have enrolled.

Jason Rosenberg was supposed to be a freshman at Tulane University. Moments after he unpacked, the university announced its plans to evacuate students.

"They put me and 600 other students in 10 busses and six vans and we took a 13-hour trip to Jackson, Mississippi, and slept on a gym floor," Rosenberg said.

The Owings Mills, Md., native was lucky enough to get a ticket on one of the last flights to Maryland before Katrina hit.

"I like the classes and I'm happy with how it turned out, despite the situation," Rosenberg said.

A Westminster native and freshman at Loyola College in New Orleans is also joining McDaniel for the semester.

Stephanie Knight '03, a medical student at Tulane, had just finished her first clinical rotation when the impending category-five hurricane forced evacuations. Knight left her white jacket behind but grabbed her stethoscope, thinking she may be able to use it to help somebody.

"The hospital, unfortunately, was under about six feet of water and they had to evacuate all the patients. Now, we don't have a hospital to go back to," Knight said.

She is waiting at her Glen Burnie, Md. , home to hear what, if anything, Tulane is planning for its medical students.

The McDaniel Greek community is raising money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina by holding a car wash 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 18 in the tennis court parking lot. Washes cost $5. All proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross.
