At the Multicultural Leaders Banquet May 5, seniors involved in cultural and ethnic organizations were honored with Certificates of Appreciation and contributed to the memory-box, which will be kept by the College for an as-yet undetermined future date.

Dean Henry Reiff gave Academic Excellence Awards to Sarah Hale, Jessica In Shil Lake, Ashley Ramos, Diego de los Rios, and Ronnie Wooten. Assistant Sociology Professor Roxanna Harlow gave Presidential Awards to Diego de los Rios, Joe Evaristo, Sarah Hale, Karina Havrilla, Cherlynn “Nia” Jervay, Jessica In Shil Lake, and Ronnie Wooten. The Outstanding Senior in Leadership and Service Award was given to Jessica In Shil Lake.

Students voted Associate Dean Jean Shin as the 2006 Most Valuable Professor.

The Office of Multicultural Services hosts the annual banquet honoring graduating seniors. This year, President Joan Develin Coley addressed the 28 students who were recognized for participation in groups including Allies, the Asian Community Coalition, Black Student Union, Hispano-Latino Alliance, International Club, McDaniel College Gospel Choir, Sankofa Mentoring Group and the Women’s Issues Group.

“I thank you for what you have brought to our campus community,” Coley said. “It is a community where respect and understanding are treasured commodities.”

Guest speaker, life coach Dr. Debyii Sababu Thomas, motivated students to reach for opportunities to grow, lead, and better their communities and world.

“New is necessary because new is about growth and goes from moving from one stage to another,” Thomas said. “Growth is about being willing to lose one thing to gain another. Growth comes only to those who are open… You have the mind that can make our world a glorious world.”
