Director of ODMA

Mahlia Joyce
Alumna Mahlía Joyce, Director of McDaniel’s Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA), provides leadership in the area of programming to increase multicultural awareness and diversity education, leadership training and development and retention activities for students of color. Mahlía brings to the ODMA experience in grassroots community organizing with a special interest in economic and social justice and working with vulnerable populations. She has created and partnered in projects that include affordable housing, economic literacy, minority business development, community building, and conflict resolution, and has been a leader in advocating for rights of immigrants, low-income and homeless families for the past 15 years.

A Westminster native and 2003 graduate of McDaniel College, Mahlía earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Spanish and in Religious Studies with an additional concentration in International Studies. Not ready to leave her Hill home yet, in 2010, Mahlía went on to earn her Masters of Science in McDaniel College's Counselor Education program.

Among her proudest accomplishments are the opportunities that she has had to travel and immerse herself in cultures throughout Latin America as well as among immigrant and other marginalized communities within in the U.S. She is equally proud to have returned to Westminster and McDaniel College to share her passion for diversity and building community.

Mahlía enjoys cooking, dancing, and reading. Most evenings, she can be found though, relaxing with her partner José at home with their dog and cat or enjoying a meal out on the town with friends.

Office Manager

Mary C. Dietz
Mary joined the staff of The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs as well as the Office of Student Engagement in September 2010. She is no stranger to McDaniel though. Employed part-time in 2007 and 2008 for the offices of Career and Counseling Services, Mary left
when the offices moved and restructured. She was happy to return to campus though, bringing with her the experience of working for Carroll County Public Schools as a Special Education Instructional Assistant.

With CCPS, Mary worked with seventh grade students, primarily in Math classes to support their instructional needs. Her patience and gentleness were among her many attributes that enabled Mary to assist students who required smaller groups for more effective learning or those who needed help with reading and organizational skills.

Once again, a proud member of the McDaniel College community, Mary enjoys meeting, engaging, learning from (at least 5 new things a day!), and helping students of all ages and backgrounds. When not on the Hill, Mary is active with Girl Scouts and other community interests. A native of Baltimore City, Mary now lives in Westminster with her husband and two children.
