Coordinator Debra Miller discusses how the program meets the professional criteria for K-12 Reading Specialists.
Debra Miller, PhD
Dr. Miller earned her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education as well as her master's degree in Reading Education from Frostburg State University. She went on to earn a PhD in the Philosophy of Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Maryland.
Dr. Miller is a certified Reading Specialist (K-12) with professional interests in reading assessment, strategic reading instruction, and the continuous school improvement process. Her teaching experiences have incorporated elementary and secondary placements in both Maryland and Pennsylvania. In addition, she has provided Reading Support Services for multiple schools in Howard County, Maryland.
An Associate Professor of Education at the college, Dr. Miller teaches reading courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and directs the McDaniel College Reading Clinic. Dr. Miller currently serves as co-chair of the International Reading Association’s Professional Standards and Ethics Committee and as a lead writer of the IRA Standards for Reading Professionals, 2010.
