Graduating senior Eddie Blankenship has a passion for world cultures and languages. Besides English, the Taneytown, Md., native is fluent in Spanish, French and Arabic. He also is proficient in Persian and Portuguese and speaks some Mandarin Chinese.
One of McDaniel’s first four Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies graduates, Blankenship is off to Harvard in the fall where he’ll pursue a master’s degree in Islamic Studies. But first, he’ll spend the summer at Indiana University Bloomington on a government-funded fellowship to learn Dari, an Afghan dialect. “McDaniel helped me get where I wanted to go,” he says.

Thanks to a full-throttle internship at
the hit public TV program “Motorweek,” Greg Carloss ’12 cruised into his job as assistant producer even before he graduated.
Full-throttle internship
As assistant producer at Maryland Public Television’s “Motorweek,” which airs nationwide, Carloss researches new vehicles to be covered on upcoming episodes and handles various aspects of video production. But he also gets to travel across the country to car shows and road-test some very hot new wheels, including the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover and the Audi RS5. He says his degree in Communication has put him in the driver’s seat.

Genomics students illustrate DNA
A day of fun wraps up semester’s hard work
To celebrate DNA Day, the students in Biology professor Susan Parrish’s Genomics class made DNA bracelets, twisted Twizzlers connected by toothpick-strung gummy bears, expressed their genetic uniqueness in decorated brownie pops and delighted in DNA cupcakes, all to the tune of DNA-themed music and video played in the background.
The reason for the celebration is much simpler to understand than DNA’s encoded genetic instructions.
“I work them pretty hard in this class – they do original research and it is one of our writing intensive courses,” says Parrish. “I think they need a day of fun.” FULL STORY
Deaf educator makes history in Illinois
Janice Smith-Warshaw, a 1996 graduate of McDaniel’s Deaf Education graduate program, will become the first deaf woman to be superintendent of the Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD) since the school opened in 1839.
