English Professor LeRoy Panek 's upcoming book

Art and Art History Professor Susan Bloom is the new photography expert for the Web site Eons.com, which debuted July 31. Backed by the creator of Monster.com, it is directed at the 50+ market. Senior Economics Lecturer Joseph Carter, Jr., was selected to speak in September at investment and management firm T. Rowe Price in Owings Mills. As part of a quarterly staff meeting, Carter will address topics such as building relationships with customers, trends in customer satisfaction and the challenges of staying on top of the business.

English Professor Terry Dalton moderated a panel of ’06 Pulitzer Prize winners at the annual conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, held in San Francisco. For the second year, Dalton’s panel was featured on the front page of AEJMC Reporter, the daily newspaper serving the annual convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Jamie Davis ’89, a volunteer paramedic with the Community Fire Company of Rising Sun, a nursing student, and stay-at-home dad, is a finalist in the 2006 Podcast Awards, for his MedicCast podcast. Produced weekly, it contains news updates for emergency medical technicians around the world. The awards will be presented Sept. 29 at the Podcast and Portable Media Expo in California. The first novel by Catherine Donaldson ’04, “The Captains Marshall: A Promise of Freedom,” will be released by Kindred Pens Press on Oct. 23. Set in 17th-century England, the novel tells the story of two cousins who embark on an adventure to the Caribbean.

Professors of Political Science and International Studies Charles Neal and Herb Smith gave Sept. 12 election-night political analyses. Neal provided insight for Maryland Public Television, while Smith analyzed results for WMAR-TV.

Francis “Skip” Fennell, professor of Education and President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, presented “Curriculum Focal Points for PreK-8 Mathematics” Sept. 12 at the National Press Club. The focal points, three per grade level, are intended to offer a common framework for mathematics education and begin a national discussion on how to bring consistency and coherence to the curriculum.

“The Origins of the American Detective Story,” by English Professor LeRoy Panek, will be released by McFarland & Company in November. Panek, an award-winning author of books about crime fiction, here focuses on the early years of the literary form
