McDaniel College

Biology

Welcome to the Biology Department web site.

Our department has 9 permanent faculty members, whose contact information, interests, and teaching emphases are listed here.

We offer a general Biology Major that can serve for entry into a wide variety of postgraduate pathways.  For those with special interests in Molecular Biology or Environmental Biology, we offer special tracks within the Department that emphasize those areas.

The faculty of the Biology Department believes that students must work both in and beyond the classroom in order to develop a personal perspective of biological knowledge. The faculty understands its role to be that of teachers, mentors, and friends who guide students to knowledge and help them comprehend it.

Our majors go on to careers in research and teaching, and many enter graduate programs leading to Masters or Ph.D. degrees, Medical degrees, Dentistry degrees, etc.  Many Biology students find employment and enjoy successful careers with a bachelor’s degree. They enter a variety of fields such as genetics, marine science, cancer research, environmental analysis, or work as laboratory research associates.

Our department's undergraduate course offerings cover the basic requirements for most graduate programs. Students should be aware that many doctoral programs require calculus (MAT 1117), two semesters of organic chemistry (CHE 2217, 2218), and two semesters of physics (PHY 1101, 1102) in addition to the courses required by the Department. Specific requirements should be discussed with the student’s faculty adviser.
