The McDaniel College Department of Art and Art History presents the third biennial McDaniel College Faculty Art Show Oct. 3-27 at the Rice Gallery in Peterson Hall. The opening reception will be held from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 3 at the gallery.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information, call (410) 857-2595.
The multimedia display will feature work by faculty members of the Art and Art History Department, including Professor Susan Ruddick Bloom, Lecturer O. Kenneth Hankins, Associate Professor Michael Losch, Lecturer Katya Dovghan Mychajlyshyn, Assistant Professor Steven Pearson, Assistant Professor Susan Clare Scott and Lecturer Linda Van Hart.
Bloom presents a series of 20 black-and-white photos called “North of Paradise,” exploring the Amish community in Lancaster, Pa., as well as three digital paintings related to her recently published book, “Digital Collage and Painting.”
Hankins will display pottery, while Losch will exhibit large works in acrylic. The themes of Losch’s paintings are concerned with how personal earthly and physical conflicts find resolution in spiritual unity.
Mychajlyshyn will show two figure drawings in pencil, a watercolor landscape depicting her neighborhood in Kyiv, Ukraine, in the springtime, and an oil painting on a biblical theme.
Pearson presents works including oil on canvas, oil on paper and acrylic on paper.
“Ultimately, a painting is visual,” Pearson says. “It should communicate to you visually, sometimes with subtle whispers, and at other times with hard blows that take your breath away. My goal is to try to achieve both in the same visual conversation.”
Scott will show pieces inspired by Chinese landscape painting, on vertical scrolls and accompanied by poetry. Van Hart will exhibit mixed media and sculpture inspired by personal tragedy.
“The Heart Armor series emerged after 9/11, the death of a dear friend and of my brother from cancer,” Van Hart says. “It seems we need a talisman in times of tragedy to help us pull together personal resources and go on.”
