With a few notable exceptions, few majors are absolutely required to enter any field of employment or graduate or professional study. Nevertheless, students often major in religious studies out of personal interest and elect to take a second major or a minor in preparation for a career. The benefits of an education in religious studies for future employment should not be underestimated. See the letter from one of McDaniel’s alumni below. Before majoring in religious studies, students thinking of entering a religious profession (ministry, priesthood, rabbinate, and so on) should be in contact with their own religious body to determine what kind of undergraduate education that body recommends.

The skills I learned as a religious studies major have been the keys to my success. Much to the surprise of my peers for the past 9 years, the skills I learned as a religious studies major - looking beneath the surface for deeper meaning, being able to hear everyone’s ideas and draw the links between them - have served me well in the IT industry. I always have a leg up on other developers because my thought process is not rooted in mathematics and code.
Tell your students that a degree in Religious Studies can lead to a lot of opportunities they cannot even imagine right now. My wildest dreams would not have placed me where I am today when I first stepped into the classroom in 1996. Classes in religious studies prepared me to do anything.
