Federal Student Loans
Who Qualifies? The student must be accepted into a degree seeking program or a teacher certification program and taking at least 6 credits per semester.
Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans are low-interest, variable-rate, need-based educational loans with the principal being deferred until the student graduates, withdraws, or drops below 6 credits. The federal government pays the interest to the lender during a student's enrollment in school (at least 6 credits) and during a six-month grace period immediately following a student's separation from school.
Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans are also low-interest, variable-rate educational loans. However, they are not based on need and the student is responsible for paying all the interest that accrues on the loan. Students may pay this interest while in school, or have the interest capitalized (that is, added to the principal balance of the loan). As with the subsidized Stafford Loan, students receive a six-month grace period following their separation from school and may defer their loans under certain conditions.
For student teaching programs that do not lead to a Master's degree, the maximum Stafford Loan amount is $2750 subsidized and $2500 unsubsidized per semester.
The maximum a Master's student may borrow per year is $8500 in subsidized Federal Stafford Loans and $10,000 in unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans. However, a student cannot borrow more than his or her cost of attendance minus any other financial aid (e.g. DVR) for which he or she is eligible.
The interest rate is determined each year, effective July 1st and is capped at 8.25%. Deferment of previous and current loans are based on at least 6 (six) credits each semester, not on completion of program.
