Virginia-based financial adviser Donald Rembert, class of 1961, and wife Judy Ellis Rembert, class of 1960, honored former Green Terror football coach Robert J. Waldorf with a $150,000 gift to create a new pedestrian walkway connecting North Village to Gill Center. A morning dedication ceremony was held Oct. 7 as part of Homecoming Weekend 2006.

Coach Robert Waldorf.The Remberts chose to honor the memory of Dr. Robert J. Waldorf who served as athletic director and football coach from 1957-65. Rembert played high school football for Coach Waldorf at Washington and Lee High School in Arlington prior to joining the Green Terror squad.

“Duty, loyalty and, brother, do your very best was Coach’s mantra,” said Rembert, who lost his father at age 18 and says that Coach was “mentor, surrogate father and eventually my client.”

When Waldorf retired as a guidance counselor and coach at Fort Hunt High (Va.) he quoted the Arabian proverb “Four things come not back, ‘The spoken word…the sped arrow…the past life…and the neglected opportunity.’”

and Don’s wife Judy, class of 1960.With the naming of Waldorf Way, the Remberts both honor Coach Waldorf and provide opportunity for all who knew him to remember him. Coach Waldorf’s daughter, Helen Waldorf, traveled from Jamaica Plain, Mass., to attend the dedication.

Board Chair James Melhorn joined President Joan Develin Coley in presenting the Remberts with a commemorative football signed by football coach Tim Keating.

“Athletics and recreation are vital components of our living-learning community,” says Coley. “We are a residential college, an environment where learning is just as likely to take place on an athletic field as in the classroom.”
