Smiles of Victory

For the 25th year, McDaniel students teamed up with students with disabilities in grades K-12 to play in the Tournament of Champions.

A Winning Formula

The 25th annual “Tournament of Champions” brought nearly 100 students in grades K – 12 with orthopedic, visual and behavioral needs to campus for the action-filled day. Each student was paired with a “buddy” from McDaniel and had the opportunity to participate in 16 different events, such as scooter races, hula hooping, hockey and golfing. Students do not compete against each other and can go back to events to better their own scores. Organized by students in the Adapted Physical Education class in conjunction with the Carroll County Therapeutic Recreation Council, “Tournament of Champions” is designed for students who don’t qualify for Special Olympics but need a specialized event so that they can challenge themselves and demonstrate their skills.

Probing Particle Physics

Physics majors Gina Mayonado and Huy Phan just landed prestigious summer research internships at the world’s largest and second largest particle accelerators in Switzerland and Illinois.

The juniors will conduct research in what Phan describes as physics’ “final frontier” using the cutting-edge technology at CERN in Geneva and the Fermi National Accelerator Lab near Chicago.

Mayonado of Salisbury, Md., will be part of the high-energy particles group of four undergraduates traveling to Geneva through Duke University and Phan, an international student from Vietnam, received a Lee Tang Internship from the Fermi Lab.

Exposing Corruption in Philly’s Police Department

“Busted: A Tale of Corruption and Betrayal in the City of Brotherly Love,” by Pulitzer Prize-winners Wendy Ruderman ’91 and her reporting partner Barbara Laker, hits bookstores March 11. The gripping narrative, published by HarperCollins, expands on the Philadelphia Daily News series of stories that exposed widespread corruption in the city’s narcotics division and earned the two investigative reporters journalism’s top prize. It's already attracting positive buzz, with raves from USA Today and authors including Mark Bowden of “Black Hawk Down” and crime novelist Edna Buchanan.
