Career Opportunities
Graduates of this program fill various positions:
- Teachers of deaf students in elementary and secondary schools (deaf schools, charter schools, or mainstream programs).
- ASL Specialists working with deaf students whose first language is ASL.
- ASL Specialists working with deaf (or hearing) students whose second language is ASL.
- Literacy Specialists working with deaf students to enhance reading and writing skills in English.
Internship Oppurtunities
The Student Teaching Internship at a Glance
- Prior to student teaching, graduate students will have participated in 150 hours of pre-teaching (practicum) experience, working with students from a wide range of ages and academic abilities.
- Potential interns must achieve a level of 3.0 or higher on the ASLPI and complete all prerequisite and required courses prior to internship placement.
- Students choose either a traditional student teaching internship of 10 weeks or an on-the-job internship of 6–9 months (with department approval).
- Students indicate internship preferences from a variety of locations across the United States and Canada.
Application deadlines: February 15th (Fall) and September 15th (Spring)
- Graduate students in the ASL or Literacy Specialist programs must complete an additional internship.
