Dr. Kerby earned her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Texas Wesleyan University, a master's degree from Texas Christian University, and a master's and doctorate in Library Science from Texas Woman's University.
Dr. Kerby started her career as a kindergarten teacher. For fifteen years, she served as the librarian of J.B. Little Elementary School in Arlington, Texas. Her professional interests are in children’s and young adult literature, collection development, and writing. Her most recent professional title,
Collection Development for the School Library Media Program, was published by the American Association of School Librarians in 2006. Her newest book for children, OWNEY, THE MAIL-POUCH POOCH was published in 2008 by Frances Foster / Farrar, Straus, & Giroux and received a starred revew in
School Library Journal. In 2006, she was named to the Fulbright Senior Specialist Roster as an expert in school librarianship and children's and young adult literature.
She maintains professional affiliations in the American Library Association, where she is active in the divisions of ALSC and AASL. She served on the committee that revised the latest AASL/NCATE Standards for Initial Programs for Specialist Preparation. She also belongs to the Authors Guild, International Association of School Librarians, Maryland Association of School Librarians, Pennsylvania School Librarians Association, Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, Texas Library Association, and the Texas State Historical Association.
