SED FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to complete the program?
Because programs vary significantly with student needs, it is difficult to provide a "typical" program length. It has been our experience that students who earn both certification and a master's degree take two to three years to complete their program.

Is it necessary to student teach?
A student teaching experience is required, even for those students who possess general education certification.

If I am teaching now, must I leave my place of employment to complete my student teaching requirement?
Depending on your current responsibilities, you may be able to complete your student teaching in your home school. If you are presently teaching a class of, say, ten or more students, and you are responsible for developing academic strategies, your student teaching, with special education supervision, can occur at your present employment location. If, however, you are an assistant to a teacher, or you are responsible for a small number of students, an alternate placement will need to be arranged.

If I have taken a course as an undergraduate, can I use that course for special education certification and the master's degree?
A limited number of courses may be considered for waiving in consultation with your program advisor. You can transfer six graduate credits in a relevant field from an accredited college or university toward the M.S. degree.
