Henry Reiff, professor of Education and dean for Student Academic Life, spent fall break aiding the recovery effort in New Orleans. As part of the crew for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), Reiff  donned a hazmat suit and gutted houses for three days. » Full Story
“Urinetown” musical presented at McDaniel College

The McDaniel College Department of Theatre Arts presents the musical comedy “Urinetown” at 8 p.m. Nov. 15-18 in WMC Alumni Hall. “Urinetown” tells the story of a future civilization where a drought has overcome the earth, and people can only use public pay-toilets. When one man decides he’s had enough, he leads a revolution to freedom. » Full Story
First-year students meet “Persepolis” author

Students from McDaniel and other Maryland colleges attended a lecture by critically acclaimed graphic novelist Marjane Satrapi Nov. 1 at Goucher College. She told the crowd of more than 600 that the purpose of her work is to encourage people to relate to those of different cultures. Satrapi’s memoir “Persepolis,” in which she describes her childhood in Iran during the Shah’s regime, was required reading for the class of 2010, and many of the McDaniel attendees were freshmen. » Full Story
Limestone sculpture a bit of Westminster in Estonia
Wasyl Palijczuk, professor of Art emeritus, spent 10 days carving a limestone pillar in Estonia for its Limestone Days Carving Festival this summer, he explained Oct. 26 as part of the Carroll Arts Council’s “Lunch and Learn” series. Palijczuk was selected to represent Westminster in its sister city, Paide, Estonia. » Full Story

Professor elected to govern Phi Beta Kappa
The nation’s premier honor society, Phi Beta Kappa, Oct. 27 elected James E. Lightner, professor of Mathematics emeritus to the position of district senator. Lightner becomes the first Maryland senator in recent memory and one of only seven district senators nationwide. » Full Story
