Military Vets Tackle College and Football

McDaniel’s support system is key to success

You would never know by watching Shane Douglass, Jeremy Nagle and Mike Wright go to classes, study in the library and run out onto the field for Saturday football games that they traded military uniforms for McDaniel’s green and gold.

Their high school graduations were followed by basic training, not college orientation. They've been to Afghanistan, but not for study abroad. They served their country proudly before turning their attentions to some unfinished business.

Now, thanks to the G.I. Bill’s Yellow Ribbon Program and their own true grit, they are fulfilling long-held dreams to go to college and play football. MORE »

2013 Grad: Spreading Stories of Hope from Congo

French Major Helps Change Lives with Words

As Field Communications Fellow with HOPE International, Mara Seibert ’13 is earning her self-proclaimed title of insatiably curious humanitarian traveler. She practiced French, her major, every day while studying in Brussels, Belgium, a language that has been an invaluable tool in her current location: the Republic of Congo.

There, she tells the stories of the 4,000 clients HOPE serves through community bank groups and microloans. In addition to her French major, which she uses daily, the many Communication courses Seibert took left her “amazed at the power of a story or a photo to change people’s perceptions of a single event.” She sharpened her writing skills as a blogger for the McDaniel Admissions office and now blogs for HOPE as well.
