Minor concentrations are available in the following areas:

Note: Minors in elementary and secondary education are also available in conjunction with the English major. Email Dr. Mary Bendel Simso for questions about this.

Minor in English/American Literature (20 hours)

1. One course in critical and analytical approaches to literature:

  • ENG 2213 - Introduction to Literary Methods and Critical Approaches

2. Four elective courses in literature (at least one must be 3000-level courses).

Minor in Writing (20 hours)

1. Three writing courses (above ENG 1102), from

  • ENG 2204 - Advanced News Reporting and Writing OR Four Credits of ENG 2298 Newspaper Practicum
  • ENG 2206 - Creative Writing – Poetry
  • ENG 2207 - Creative Writing – Fiction
  • ENG 2208 - Advanced Composition
  • ENG 2211 - Grammar & Usage *
  • ENG 2212 - Professional Communication
  • ENG 2214 - Editing and Desktop Publishing

2. One course from the following:

  • Eng 3307 - Advanced Professional Communication: Writing in Digital Environments
  • Eng 3308 - Advanced Professional Communication: Writing in Law and Policy
  • Eng 33xx - Advanced Professional Communication: Writing in Professional Contexts
  • Eng 3/4000 - Internship in English, with a writing focus (with approval of the Writing Committee)
  • Eng 3/4000 -Independent Study in English, with a writing focus (with approval of the Writing Committee)
  • Possibility of “Special Topics in Advanced Writing,” per faculty interest and consensus.

3. One course from the following:

  • Eng 3306 - Approaches to the Study of Language *
  • Eng 3309 - Rhetorical Approaches to Everyday Discourse
  • Eng 3310 - Rhetorical Approaches to Nonfiction Literature

* You may count either ENG 2211 or 3306, but you may not count both.

Minor in Journalism (20 hours)

3. Recommended

  • An off-campus internship
