Student hopes to probe criminal minds
At a crime scene, Cody Crutchley ’09 can identify blood types and lift fingerprints and footprints. Hoping to make a career of studying the criminal mind, the Psychology and Sociology double major with minors in Forensic Science and Sports Science has won a competitive internship with the FBI.

“I got into forensics when I was younger watching psychological thrillers like ‘Silence of the Lambs,’” Crutchley says with a serious stare. “I’ve read books on Jon Benet Ramsey and OJ Simpson, and it got me interested in the psychological aspect of what makes a criminal tick.”

Crutchley is a student of the Forensic Science program, established in 2004, and offered by the departments of Chemistry and Sociology. Requirements include courses in general science and biology.

Many FBI agents work the streets for 20 years in order to gain experience before they can become criminal profilers. But the Frederick native is used to working hard. In addition to his studies, he runs cross country, as well as indoor and outdoor track. He is vice president of the Psychology Club, a resident adviser, works on the Student Advisory Council, and is a member of three honor societies.

“I think he’d be a great asset to the FBI. He has a very analytical mind and a lot of personal integrity,” says Assistant Professor of Psychology Stephanie Madsen, who advises his Psychology major.

“While he strives for excellence, he has an innate sense that an important requirement to be happy in life is to have a sense of balance,” says Associate Professor of Sociology Lauren Dundes, who advises his Sociology major.

Crutchley credits his parents, who cheer him on as the first in his family attending college.

“My parents both pushed me to get good grades because it is important in opening doors,” he says. “McDaniel has helped me broaden my views about what you can achieve. I’ve always had the mentality to do well, and I still have a lot of fun, but I get my work done because I know it’s the most important thing.”
