Santur virtuoso melds Persian and flamenco
Persian music virtuoso Roya Bahrami will perform at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 in McDaniel College’s McDaniel Lounge.

The concert, sponsored by the Department of Music, is free and open to the public. For more information, call 410-857-2552.

Spanish music, including flamenco, has roots and influences in the Middle East dating back centuries. Bahrami created the genre of Persian-flamenco fusion, and has performed with the world-renowned flamenco dancer Carmela Greco at concerts in Baltimore, D.C., and Portland, Ore.

“There’s a lot of pop flamenco out there, but Bahrami is the only artist who emphasizes the Persian roots of flamenco music,” says McDaniel College Associate Professor of Music Robin Armstrong.

Born and raised in Tehran, Roya Bahrami has performed classical Persian music in the United States since 1985. She plays the santur, a three-octave Persian hammered dulcimer with 72 strings arranged on adjustable tuning pegs in 18 quadruple sets, nine bronze in the low register, and nine steel in the middle register.

Bahrami has collaborated with international artists to produce a CD, “Probe,” which fuses Persian, Jazz, Indian, and Southeast Asian music.
