Federal Work-Study
Community Service Program

We are required to spend a certain amount of our Federal Work-Study (FWS) funds to pay students to perform community service jobs. The intent of Congress is to encourage FWS students to participate in community service activities that will benefit the nation and engender in the students a sense of social responsibility and commitment to the community. The jobs must be within certain fields and the work performed must provide services that improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals, or solve particular problems related to their needs. The jobs should involve the student with direct contact with community residents in some way; therefore jobs that primarily consist of office duties are not be appropriate. The fields include: health care, child care, literacy, training, education, welfare, social services, transportation, housing and neighborhood improvement, public safety, crime prevention and control, recreation, rural development, and community improvement.

McDaniel College acts as the student employer. We pay the students and perform all the accompanying paperwork. The community agencies are responsible for providing supervision and training, evaluation of the work performed, and confirmation of the hours worked. The agencies have complete control over the hiring and scheduling process. Students must complete all the required paperwork with the McDaniel College payroll office as well as any agency paperwork. Time sheets are submitted to the payroll office by the last day of the month and checks are available the 10th of the month, just like regular work-study jobs. In addition, students cannot go over their FWS award amount. We are open to new ideas for other Community service jobs.
