Middle school mentor/tutor – This after-school mentoring program for girls creates and maintains a welcoming, comfortable environment for mentees at Carroll County middle schools. Based on a mentor-mentee relationship formed from mutual trust, mentors instill in mentees a positive outlook on higher education. Mentors also provide mentees with tutoring for academic subjects in which they are deficient. They talk about topics that are not usually discussed in the classroom, yet are still appropriate in the public middle school context (e.g., stereotypes, eating disorders, self-esteem) with the goal that such conversations can be continued with parents/guardians. Finally, they teach mentees skills that will facilitate resolution of school and personal problems that arise and help mentees build confidence in their abilities. Hours vary.
