Faculty and Staff

Professor Deveny received his Bachelor's Degree at the State University of New York-Albany, his Master's Degree at the University of Florida, and his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina. Professor Deveny's areas of particular teaching interests include Golden Age Spanish literature and Spanish cinema.

Professor Donoso Macaya earned her B.A in Literatura y Lingüística Hispanoamericanas at Pontificia Universidad Católica in Chile, and her Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures at Washington University in Saint Louis. Professor Donoso specializes in 20th-21st century Latin American literature and culture, film and visual studies, and theory. Her research interests include 21st century Mexican and Southern Cone literature, Latin American film, avant-garde and neo-avant-gardes studies, interconnections of literature and philosophy, politics and aesthetics, relationships between text and photography, history and theory of photography.

Professor Esa (Department Chair) received his Master's Degree and his Ph.D. at the University of Heidelberg. Professor Esa's area of particular teaching interests include German women writers, Novellen, proverbs and idioms.

Professor Evergates received her Bachelor's Degree at Goucher College and her Ph.D. at the Johns Hopkins University. Professor Evergates' area of particular teaching interests include Greek and Latin.

Professor Hachad earned her Master’s Degree in English and African American Studies from Université de Provence and her Ph.D. in French with a certificate in Comparative Literature from Emory University. Her research and teaching interests include artistic and literary forms derived from representations of identity in the Maghreb and the Caribbean in the 20th and 21st centuries, feminine voices from the francophone world, postcolonial theory.

Professor McNichols received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Scranton, and a Master's in Teaching in Spanish from Binghamton University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Professor McNichols' particular interests include Spanish-American Colonial literature, Spanish and Spanish-American early modern women writers, and writing by and about the indigenous and African Diaspora.

Professor Motard-Noar received her Certificat de Didactique des Moyens Audio-Visuels, her Bachelor's degree in French Literature, and her Master's degree in modern French Literature at the Université de la Sorbonne.  She received her Ph.D. at the Univeristy of Nebraska-Lincoln. Professor Motard-Noar's particular interests include nineteenth and twentieth century French literature, women's studies, and narrative theory.

Professor Zaru, native of Palestine (Ramallah), has been teaching Arabic at McDaniel College since fall 2007.

Academic Secretary:

María "Mardi" Melendez is the Academic Secretary for the departments of Foreign languages, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. Her office is located in BMC 104.

Part-time Faculty:

Professor Araujo (Miller) is a graduate of McDaniel College with a BA degree in Spanish. She also teaches ESOL at Carroll Community College.

Professor Bodin received her Bachelor degree from McNeese State University in Louisiana, her Master's degree from Louisiana State University and her Ph.D from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Professor González is a native of Colombia and has his Master's in Spanish Literature and Latin America Area Studies. He has been teaching for 35 years in Maryland and is the instructor for many of our elementary and intermediate Spanish courses. 

Professor Kang, from Taichung City in Taiwan, is currently completing her Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. Her Bachelor's degree in Foreign Languages & Literatures is from the National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan.

Professor Kerns received her Bachelor's Degree in French and Communications from Albright College and a Master's in French Literature from the University of Colorado-Boulder.  She received her Ph.D in French and Critical Theory from the University of California-Davis.

Professor Lyon-Vaiden received his Bachelor's Degree in German from the University of the South at sewanee and a Master's degree in Education from the Johns Hopkins University.

Professor Upton, received her Master's from the University of Augsburg, Germany.
