Two McDaniel students were elected to leadership positions at the 18th annual Legislative Session of the Maryland Student Legislature April 27-29 at the State House in Annapolis.
Jared Luner ’08 was elected to serve as the student governor for 2007-8. Kristina Belich ’08 was elected to serve as Secretary of State. A third McDaniel student, Matt Emery ’10, was awarded the Thomas V. Mike Miller Award, which is given to an outstanding up and coming student in their first or second year of participation in the student legislature.
“This is a recognition of an outstanding performance,” says Herb Smith, professor of Political Science and International Studies. “Jared is the second governor from McDaniel. The first was Jeremiah Kelly ’01. It is a considerable responsibility.”
The Maryland Student Legislature (MSL) is an educational non-profit organization. Students from thirteen universities and colleges across Maryland join together to write, research and debate issues of local, state, and national importance. Additionally, students are educated on the legislative process including developing skills in parliamentary procedure, researching and drafting legislation, and understanding the organizational structure of leadership. Throughout the academic year, students participate in legislative sessions culminating with the Annual Session, which will be held April 25-27, 2008.
