Peter Bradley, assistant professor of Philosophy, authored "We Can Share What We've Got of Yours: Archive.org, Authorship and Authenticity" in The Grateful Dead and Philosophy: Getting High Minded About Love and Haight, edited by Steve Gimbel, Open Court Press, in the series Philosophy and Popular Culture.
Sharon Craig, associate professor of Education, has published "The Effects of an Adapted Interactive Writing Intervention on Children's Phonological Awareness, Spelling, and Early Reading Development" in the Journal of Educational Psychology in November/December 2006.
Rebecca Davis, assistant professor of English, has published “‘Fullynge’ Nature: Spiritual Charity and the Logic of Conversion in Piers Plowman” in the Yearbook of Langland Studies 2006.
Tom Deveny, Professor of Foreign Languages, has published "The Spanish Civil War in Films from the Franco Period" in Teaching Representations of the Spanish Civil War, edited by Noël Valis, 2007.
Mohamed Esa, associate professor of Foreign Languages, gave two presentations at NECTFL (Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Language) in New York on "Music of Rammstein in the German Classroom" and "Islam and Muslims in Europe."
Skip Fennell, professor of Education, edited Navigating through Number and Operations, published by the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics). The 217-page volume is intended for teachers at the 3-5 grade levels.
Volker Franke, associate professor of Political Science and International Studies, was one of the signatories to the Hamburg (Germany) declaration on the use of lethal means of warfare. In addition, Volker has published two articles: "The Peacebuilding Dilemma" in the Journal of the International Peace Research Association; and with Peter Croll “UN Peacebuilding Commission needs positive notion of peace” in Cooperation + Development. Volker has been appointed to serve on the advisory board on Civil Crisis Prevention for the German Foreign Ministry.
Kevin Harrison, assistant professor of Environmental Policy and Science, was quoted in the Financial Times for giving gardeners in England advice on global climate change.
Julia Jasken, assistant professor of English, presented a paper on "Generic Disruption and Community Impact: Thinking Through the Self," at the Annual Conference on College Composition and Communication in New York in March.
Members of the Communication Department presented papers at the 98th annual conference of the Eastern Communication Association in Providence, Rhode Island, in April: Robert Lemieux on “Affinity Seeking, Social Loneliness, and Social Avoidance Among Facebook Members”; Jasna Meyer on "Voices from the Homeland War in Croatia"; and Deborah Vance on "Free Love in China? A Study of Chinese Women's Response to Sex and the City" and "Building Self-Reliant Communities: A Cross-Cultural Look at Creating Networks of Support.”
Janet Medina, associate professor of Education, was a presenter at the Maryland Association for Bilingual Education Third Annual Spring Conference “Educating for Multilingualism” held at McDaniel in April.
Debra Miller, associate professor of Education, has been appointed co-chair of the International Reading Association's Professional Standards and Ethics Committee beginning in 2009 and invited to serve as a committee member in the development of the 2010 Standards for Reading Professionals.
Paul Miller, associate professor of History, will Co-Chair the Organizing Committee for the International Association of Genocide Scholars Biennial Meeting in Sarajevo this summer.
Martine Motard-Noar, professor of French, organized and presented a roundtable at the Virginia Commonwealth University French Film Festival in Richmond, Virginia in March.
Steven Pearson, assistant professor of Art and Art History, had a solo exhibition of his paintings at the Delaplaine Visual Art Center in Frederick: "Chromagenics: New Paintings and works on Paper." Seven of Steve’s paintings were featured in AM Projects Gallery Pavilion at the Bridge Art Fair in Chicago in April. Steve and two students, Lee Oliver and Chloe Watson, entered their work in the Maryland Art Place's benefit exhibition, Out of Place.
Jane Sharpe, associate librarian of Hoover Library, was invited to give presentations at three faculty meetings at Winters Mill, Francis Scott Key, and Liberty high schools on college research skills and our expectations of incoming students.
Elizabeth van den Berg, associate professor of Theatre Arts, served as dialect coach on the critically acclaimed production of “The Constant Wife” and “Rue 13 L'amour” at the Olney Theatre Center for the Arts. Her review of the new e-book British Dialects by Paul Meier will be published in the upcoming journal of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association.
