McDaniel College Counseling Services provides an opportunity for students to explore problems and concerns that interfere with their adjustment to and success in college. Students meet with a licensed mental health professional in a confidential setting. Counseling Services are available to all full-time undergraduate and graduate students during the academic calendar year.
After an initial assessment (intake appointment), the counselor will determine if the student’s needs are best met by the Center's services or off campus resources. In the latter case, referrals will be made to other sources off campus.
The services offered include time limited short-term counseling, crisis intervention, and psychiatric consultation as needed. Most counseling is done on a one-on-one basis. The number of sessions depends on the nature and extent of the problem, and is determined individually by the counselor.

What is Counseling?
Counseling is a confidential process designed to help you address your concerns and problems, to learn more about yourself and to learn and discover effective coping strategies. Counseling involves sharing sensitive, personal and private information that may be difficult to address. Your counselor is available to support you throughout the counseling process to help you grow and learn about yourself.
Reasons to Come to Counseling
There are many reasons why students may seek counseling services. Some typical concerns students may have include:
- Adjustment to college
- Separating from old friends
- Troubled relationships
- Feeling sad and depressed
- Rape/sexual assault
- Feeling anxious
- Feeling distracted and unable to concentrate
- Alcohol and other drug use
- Difficulty sleeping
- Eating concerns/dieting
Confidentiality
Counseling sessions are confidential, and information regarding counseling sessions cannot be released without a student’s written permission. The areas of confidentiality include whether or not a student has come to the center, as well as the content of sessions. There is not routine communication with anyone – including parents, faculty, administrators, staff or other students – without the knowledge of the student and his/her written permission.
On-campus Psychiatric Consultation
Limited on-campus psychiatric consultation is available to students who are in therapy at the Counseling Center. Students first have an appointment with one of the on-campus therapists who then schedule the referral. Referred students must be willing to continue to work with both the psychiatrist and the therapist for treatment. Referrals are not accepted solely for the transfer of medication management.
How to Schedule an Appointment
Students may schedule an appointment with a counselor by calling Counseling Services
(410) 871-3305. Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm. Counseling Services is located in Smith House.
In the event of an emergency after office hours, students can contact the on-call Area Coordinator or Campus Safety, ext. 2202.
Coordination with Off-Campus Mental Health Providers
McDaniel College Counseling Services will make every effort to coordinate services, where appropriate, with off-campus mental health providers. The student must sign a release for information, and the treating physician, psychiatrist, therapist, and/or learning disability specialist must provide records to aid in the assessment prior to beginning treatment. The Director of Counseling Services will determine if the student’s needs can be met within the scope of Counseling Services. Continuation of treatment will require communication between the off-campus provider and McDaniel College Counseling Services.
