McDaniel College

92QUrban radio station broadcasts live from campus
“We’re broadcasting live from McDaniel College in Westminster Maryland,” said WERQ-FM (92Q) personality Erika Kane into her microphone.

A loud, collective cheer rose from students, professors and others who gathered to watch and participate in the four-hour broadcast Oct. 28 outside Englar Dining Hall.

One of the missions of 92Q is to keep young people focused on the future. To that end, the station visited a number of campuses this fall during homecoming in an effort to get people in Baltimore excited about local colleges.

“We motivate kids to stay in school, to show them they can get a job like this,” said Konan. “We’re trying to tell people to stay positive, stay in school, and go to college.”

92Q Jams is one of 70 radio stations – four of them in the Baltimore region – in 22 urban markets owned by Radio One, based in Lanham, Md. The station’s market reaches north to Delaware, south to Laurel, Md., east to Cambridge, Md., and west to Northern Virginia.

Two DJs from the station, Kane and her co-host Konan, interviewed McDaniel students, professors, and staff about programs and opportunities at McDaniel.

McDaniel men’s basketball Coach Bob Flynn introduced members of his team, President Joan Develin Coley stopped by to send her good wishes, and Carl Taylor ’01 brought nine members of a gospel choir to perform.

“This is what we need to improve relations for all races,” Taylor said. “It’s all about coming together.”

Nicole Carter ’07, a member of the Homecoming court, said she thought the visit was a great idea. “92Q is an urban station and for them to come here to Westminster makes us proud to be here too.”

“McDaniel is being showcased on an urban radio station,” said Multicultural Services Director Zephia Bryant. “There are a large amount of urban students who may not have heard of McDaniel or know they have a place here. Now they know.”
