Summer experiences educate and enlighten

This summer, McDaniel students volunteered around the world, won competitive study grants and interned at organizations that will give them a head start in their careers. Here’s a look at where McDaniel students were this summer:

Spanish major Chris Bosco ’10 went to Guadalajara, Mexico, with the Cultural Experience Abroad (CEA) on a five-week language immersion program.

Mathematics major Jeff Davis ’11 worked for the Citizens Campaign for the Environment out of New Haven, Conn. He informed people about the global climate crisis and asked them for donations and to write letters to lawmakers.

Psychology majors Brittany Eyler ’08 and Kate Maloney ’09 interned at Adams Hanover Counseling Services, working with people who have a variety of mental illnesses. They co-facilitated group therapy sessions.

Theatre Arts-Communication dual major Christine Hechmer ’08 worked for the temporary healthcare staffing agency Favorite Healthcare Staffing. She plans to apply for jobs in Human Resources after graduation.

English major Katie Kashkett ’08 won third place in the annual Jane Austen Society of North America essay contest with her essay “A Knightley Nightmare: Mr. Knightley's Threat to Emma's Feminine Power.”

Philosophy and Religious Studies dual major Katie Kernan ’08 was a lifeguard for the Holiday Inn Oceanfront Suites on 17th Street and the boardwalk in Ocean City.

English and Political Science dual major Stacey Knight ’10 interned with Erickson Retirement Communities in the Government and Community Affairs Department, where she worked on a taskforce establishing national corporate partners with a nonprofit organization, completed a white paper on Medicaid Policy in Continuing Care Retirement Communities, and staffed a political fundraiser.

Business Administration and Economics major Katie Morse ’10 traveled with a group from her church to Honduras to assist the group Amor Fe y Esperanza (Love, Faith and Hope) with childcare.

Biology major Kelly Neel ’08 interned and volunteered in a South African children’s hospital through a group called “Connect-123.”

Business Administration, Economics and German major Courtney Novotny '08 interned at Munich Re (Münchener Rückversicherungs-Gesellschaft), a transnational reinsurance company headquartered in Munich, Germany.  During her internship in the Corporate Underwriting and Global Clients division, she conducted research on insurance and American mass litigation for a joint project between Munich Re and the RAND Institute for Civil Justice.

Business major Kadijat ‘Yemi’ Oladiran ’09 worked for the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) at National Institute of Health (NIH) as a summer intern and traveled with her family to Nigeria to visit relatives.

Afro-Latino Studies major Clayton Rosa ’09 won a competitive research grant for a program at the University of North Carolina, and spent the summer researching the possibility of a shared consciousness in constructions of identity with African-American and Latino poetry.

Art major Tim Snyder '08 interned for Robin Jones Marketing, a graphic design firm in Frederick. The agency covers design, marketing, advertising and public relations.

Janice Watson ’09 was the cadet commander of a Civil Air Patrol Basic Encampment, similar to Air Force’s Basic Training.
