McDaniel College

Marshall Hall dedication
Thomas Marshall
The College will dedicate Marshall Hall, part of the North Village Apartment complex, at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 in memory of Honorary Trustees Thomas and Elizabeth Marshall. The couple taught at the College during the 1940s and 1950s.

Thomas Marshall joined the College in 1943 as assistant professor of English. In 1947, he became professor of American Literature. A graduate of Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania, Marshall was a Duke University faculty fellow in 1953, Fulbright Professor at Athens University in 1954-5 and University of Mexico visiting professor in 1962-3. He was an honorary member of the McDaniel Board of Trustees from 1982 until his death in 1991.

Elizabeth Marshall, a landscape architect and avid gardener, joined the faculty in 1944 as an adjunct instructor of mechanical drawing. She was a graduate of the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture and the Cambridge School of Architecture. Elected as an honorary trustee in 1994, she served on the Board’s Buildings and Grounds Committee. She generously supported the College by participating in the Defining Moment Campaign and through contributions to the Annual Fund. Because of her love of reading and literature, Elizabeth became the anonymous benefactor of the annual Holloway lecture series, introducing outstanding speakers to campus. She died in 2005 at the age of 93.

The North Village Apartments, a residential village for upperclass students featuring apartment houses that resemble country manor homes, are a part of the College’s Master Plan. The buildings are environmentally responsive, and include geothermal heating and cooling.
