McDaniel College Theatre presents "The People's State: Out of Chaos comes Order" at 7:30 Dec. 3 in Alumni Hall (Understage). The performance is free and open to the public. For more information, call the box office at 410-857-2448. “The People’s State” is about peoples’ differing social and political viewpoints. This is a staged reading of a play written by Brandon Senter ’09. After McDaniel student actors perform the piece, audience members will be asked to give advice for improvements.

McDaniel College’s Hoover Library is hosting a five-part reading and discussion series “Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature – Identity and Imagination.” “The Rabbi’s Cat” by Joann Sfar will be discussed at 7 p.m. Dec. 4 in Hoover Library’s boardroom. At 7 p.m. Nov. 19 in Baker Chapel, the College presents student chamber music ensembles. The concert features the Flute Choir, Flute Quartet and Woodwind Trio. The Flute Choir will perform “Masques” by Anne McGinty, Phyllis Avidan Louke’s “Of Wizards and Witches” and “Global Village Samba,” featuring percussion. The Flute Quartet will perform movement 2 from “Legends of the Greenwood” by Catherine McMichael and “Trepak” from the Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky, among other pieces. The Woodwind Trio will play traditional Irish tunes and American fiddle tunes including "Londonderry Air," "Soldier’s Joy," "Ave Maria," "To a Wild Rose," and "Funeral March for a Marionette."

At 7 p.m. Nov. 26 in Baker Memorial Chapel, the McDaniel Brass Ensemble presents “Brass Potpourri.” Among many pieces, the ensemble will showcase a premiere performance of “Modal Metal,” composed by Gabriel Lubell. The Bay Street Brassworks brass quintet will also be featured.

At 7 p.m. Nov. 27 in Baker Chapel, the student guitar and string ensembles will feature the Classical Guitar Ensemble, the Jazz Guitar Ensemble, the String Ensemble and the Electric Bass Ensemble.
The Guitar Ensemble will play music for six guitars, one guitar duet, a Sonata and an arrangement of the Pink Panther theme.
The String Ensemble will play a piano quartet, the third movement, Rondo: Allegro Moderato, of Mozart's Piano Quartet in G Minor, KV 478.
The Electric Bass Ensemble will perform “Great Big World” by faculty member Bo Eckard, as well as his pieces “Shorty Gets Religion, “Little Miracles of the Night” and “Caçada.”
The Jazz Guitar Ensemble is playing "Dear Prudence" by John Lennon, "Sleepwalk" by Johnny and Santo, "Bye-Ya" by Thelonious Monk and "Wet Erase" by Keith Adams.

At 7 p.m. Nov. 30 in Levine Recital Hall, the student clarinet and saxophone ensembles present their concert. The Clarinet Ensemble will feature traditional and modern selections. The Saxophone Ensemble will showcase guest artists Don New on baritone sax and Ron Diehl on alto saxophone. Music faculty member Eric Byrd will also be a guest performer.

At 7 p.m. Dec. 2 in Baker Memorial Chapel, the College Choir presents its concert, “When Icicles Hang.” The concert is named for its featured piece, by John Rutter. Sixty McDaniel students under the direction of Music Professor Margaret Boudreaux will perform a number of works, including “The Bells of Christmas” by Robert Shindle, “Wexford Carol” in its traditional Irish arranged by David Mooney, “Behold a star from Jacob Shining” by Felix Mendelssohn, “Chanukah Candle Blessings” arranged by Joshua Jacobson. “This concert will warm your heart in many ways,” says Boudreaux. “We will also feature a fair amount of audience participation. Together we will find comfort from the coming cold darkness, and also celebrate the time we can share together finding both light and warmth in this wonderful music. “

At 7 p.m. Dec. 3 in McDaniel Lounge, the College presents its Student Solo recital. It will feature a selection of vocal and instrumental soloists performing a wide variety of music, spanning from classical to contemporary.

At 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at Carroll Community College’s (CCC) Scott Center, the College presents the Westminster Symphony Orchestra with faculty member David Kreider. The group features 10 McDaniel students and faculty members, in addition to CCC students and community musicians. They will perform “Berceuse” and “Finale from The Firebird
Suite” by Igor Stravinsky; “Piano Concerto No. 2, op. 18,1st mvmt” by Sergei
Rachmaninoff (Piano soloist- David Kreider), “Nutcracker: Suite No.1” by
Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, “Russian Christmas Music” by Reed/McCalister and
“Christmas Festival” by Leroy Anderson.

At 8 p.m. Dec. 6 in Decker Center Forum, the College presents Jazz Night. The celebration of all things jazz includes performances from three classes and members of the department's voice studio, all directed by music lecturer Bo Eckard. Ensembles include the 18-piece Thursday Jazz Ensemble, the 19-piece Monday Jazz Ensemble, and the 5-piece Jazz Combo, with vocalists Sydney Thro and Becky Kincaid. Styles of jazz represented include classic big band swing, bebop, Latin, Funk, Jazz-rock and Tin Pan Alley.

At 7 p.m. Dec. 7 in WMC Alumni Hall, the College presents its College Band Concert, under the direction of faculty member Linda Kirkpatrick. The program will feature four student conductors. It will include “Festive Overture, Op. 96” by Dmitri Shostakovich, translation by Donald Hunsberger, “Amazing Grace” by John Newton, arrangement by John Tichelli, “Folk Suite for Band” by William Grant Still, “March of the Toys/Toyland” by Victor Herbert, arranged by Tom Wallace, and “A Winter’s Carol” arranged by Mark Williams.

At 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8, the College presents its Gospel Choir concert. More than 50 McDaniel students under the direction of Eric Byrd will perform traditional and contemporary black gospel music. Kirk Franklin’s “Imagine Me” is one of the highlights.
