Forging friendships through Best Buddies
Jessica Penn ’10 is having a blast. The president of the McDaniel chapter of Best Buddies enjoyed tailgating at Homecoming with members of the program – young people with developmental disabilities. The Biology major holds an event each month where students can get together with a friend to which they are matched.

“It’s a whole new type of friendship,” says Penn. “It is simpler, without any drama. The Best Buddies are all about having fun, and the experience has helped me learn about people with developmental disabilities.”

The Best Buddies program, hosted in middle, high schools and colleges nationwide, is intended to build lasting, meaningful friendships. Students are expected to talk to their buddy at least once a week and see them at least once a month.

“It’s the kind of program that is important for students,” says Associate Professor of Education Janet Medina, the club’s faculty supervisor. “They benefit from relationships with peers who may not have the same opportunities they do.”

McDaniel teamed up in 2002 with the Arc of Carroll County, an organization that provides community-based services and support to people with cognitive and related developmental disabilities, to match students with buddies.

“I can see the relationships growing,” says Danette Kelmartin, family and education resource manager at the Arc. “It’s very rewarding for the buddies because they’re establishing themselves and opening up their network.”

Best Buddies asks for a year-long commitment. Sudents can get involved by contacting Jessica Penn at jlp024@mcdaniel.edu
