Commencement: Commencement is a ceremony to honor academic achievement. Students are required to wear proper academic regalia to be allowed to process in Commencement. Proper academic regalia includes caps, gowns, and honors cord associated with academic honors such as College Scholars, and national or departmental academic honors societies. Non-Academic cords or stoles are not worn at this event.
Seniors Honors Convocation and Investitures: Students are required to wear academic caps and gowns to be allowed to process at this event. Non-Academic cords, pins, and stoles are allowed at this event to honor non-academic campus activities such as social clubs. These items must be tasteful and approved by the Student Activities Office.
Baccalaureate: Students are required to wear academic caps and gowns to be allowed to process at this event. Both academic and non-academic cords, pins, and stoles approved by the Student Activities Office are allowed at this event.
Masters: A masters robe differs from a baccalaureate robe. Please be sure you have the proper regalia. Masters recipients should not wear their undergraduate robe.
Photographs
The College contracts with professional photographers to be set up near the Commencement stage to take photographs of each graduate as he or she receives the degree and is congratulated by President Casey. Family and friends may take their own photographs along the processional route from Baker Memorial Chapel and from areas near the stage, but are asked to not block the aisles nor the view of seated guests.
A color proof and details for ordering prints will be mailed to the student’s home address. Placement of order and costs are the responsibility of the graduate.
Considerations for Guests
Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, to the Gill Center. Tickets are required. The ceremony lasts about 2 1/4 hours. As a courtesy to the graduates and their families, you are expected to stay seated for the entire ceremony.
If seating is required for family or friends with special needs, please contact Susan Dorsey (410-857-2504) in advance to arrange reserved seating. The ceremony will be sign interpreted—we ask persons who are Deaf / hard of hearing to request seating in front of the interpreter in advance if they wish to be seated there. Closed captioning will also be available.
To allow all to hear and enjoy the Commencement ceremony, we encourage you to applaud (and cheer) for individual graduates, but request that you hold off celebrating until after the final recession. Drinking and raucous behavior during the ceremony will not be permitted.
