Sophomore’s photo places first in Microsoft contest
Colin Miller ’11 takes his camera with him everywhere he goes, is constantly experimenting with new techniques, and seeks out feedback, even if it’s negative, from professional shooters so he can continually improve his game. His talent and tenacity were recently recognized when he was awarded first prize in the Sports & Photojournalism category by Microsoft in its International Future Pro Photographer Competition. The competition received 13,000 submissions from 92 countries. » Full Story

McDaniel grad students offer reading help
This summer, 74 elementary- and middle-school children improved their reading skills at McDaniel College’s more than 30-year-old Reading Clinic. For the second year, Bank of America provided a $10,000 grant to the program, which is staffed by 22 master’s degree candidates in McDaniel’s Reading Specialist graduate program. Debra Miller, associate professor of education at McDaniel and a recognized expert in reading, directs the clinic. » Full Story
Center for the Study of Aging holds inaugural seminar
The Center for the Study of Aging (CSA) at McDaniel College launched July 29 the first of its “Meeting the Challenges of the Graying of America” seminars. Participants from regional businesses, agencies and non-profits attended the day-long professional development training, which included presentations from CSA faculty about preparing for the generation of “Baby Boomers” as they move toward retirement. » Full Story
