Gerontology Specialist Program

The Gerontology Specialist program is designed specifically for individuals who do not have a high school diploma/equivalent. These individuals should be caring for older adults, employed by an establishment frequented by older adults, or have a desire to learn more about our aging society.

Description
Through a series of six 90 minute seminars (total completion time 9 hours), participants will gain professional and personal knowledge regarding the process of aging from a bio-psycho-social perspective.

Objectives
The program is aimed at:
*reducing staff turnover;
*improving attitudes toward the older population;
*improving employee morale and compassion toward elders;
*improving communication between service-related employees and older adults;
*improving understanding of the physical, cognitive and emotional challenges of aging.

Presenters
Alva “Buzz” Baker, M.D. is the Director of the Center for the Study of Aging and an adjunct professor at McDaniel College.

Diane Martin, Ph.D. is the Academic Director of the Center for the Study of Aging and a visiting Assistant Professor of Gerontology at McDaniel College.

Credits
No college credit will be earned nor can this program be transferred to any program of study at McDaniel College.
