Exercise Science senior's independent summer research explores prosthetics.

Capstone Explores Medicine’s 3D Future

As part of her research, Molly Schonfeld visited a company that uses 3D printers to make custom prosthetic limbs and was inspired to write her final paper about this new technology.

“We think of prosthetics as arms and legs, but now with 3D printing, they’re making organs,” says professor David Petrie, who advises Schonfeld’s independent study. “We’re graduating students who may be on the initial part of this future in medicine.”

With the increasing need for occupational therapists who can work with wounded veterans and others who may need prosthetics, Schonfeld, an Exercise Science and Physical Education major, will be prepared for advanced Occupational Therapy training.

Parent Orientation
Scores High

Nearly 200 parents and guardians of the Class of 2018 sampled all things McDaniel during their own orientation a month before their children will arrive on campus. Traveling from across the country, parents spent a full two days getting to know administrators, professors and staff as well as the student preview guides who led them through the experience.

After experiencing the dorms and dining hall and learning about academics, residence life, student engagement and career services, the parents received a three-ring binder of information and contacts for future reference. "It was a wonderful experience and answered a lot of our questions," said one dad, adding: "We feel very comfortable sending our daughter here. In fact, we look forward to it in the fall."

Baltimorean “To Watch”

As the development manager at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake, 23-year-old Kaitlyn Thomas ’11 promotes mentoring relationships between youth and adults in the community. For her creativity and impact she was named one of “10 People to Watch Under 30,” a special recognition by b, the free weekly published by The Baltimore Sun.

Thomas, a Sociology major, works on everything from community outreach to fundraising. Her favorite experience is a special project she organized called “Mentoring Monologues” in which adults and youths tell their stories. “They’re making changes and making a difference in their communities — it’s powerful and inspiring.” (photo by Algerina Perna / Baltimore Sun)
