Web Registration Process

Meet With Your Advisor
After reviewing the Schedule of Classes, you must meet with your faculty adviser to discuss your course selections for the semester.

After your meeting, your faculty adviser will give electronic approval for you to register on-line at your appointed registration day and time, you can check to be sure electronic approval for web registration has been given by your adviser by looking at The Archway, under Authorizations and Restrictions.

PLEASE REMEMBER, YOU WILL FACILITATE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS IF YOU HAVE DONE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Meet with your Adviser prior to your registration day/time.  Make sure that you have been approved to register.  Go to The Archway, Log In and from the student menu, select Authorizations and Restrictions.  Look at Undergraduate Adviser Approval for Registration.
  • Check to be sure you do not have any Personal Restrictions on your record.  Go to The Archway, Log In and select Authorizations and Restrictions from the student menu.  Look at Personal Restrictions.
  • Check your registration appointment time.  View Authorizations and Restrictions on The Archway for your Group number.  An email will also be sent to you.
  • File your health records with Student Health Services.
  • Meet all of your financial obligations.
  • Meet all course pre-requisites, including math proficiency.
  • Select alternate course sections.

Registration days and times are based on your anticipated completion date and total current earned credit hours.   Anticipated degree dates are based on your admissions class.  Degree dates of August and/or December will be determined in a students last spring semester.

Your Anticipated Degree Date along with your total earned credit hours appears on The Archway, under Academic History or Program Evaluation. A McDaniel email will be sent to all students with your registration date and times noted.

Online Registration
PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY, so that you will have the best opportunity to enroll in the courses of your choice.

Prior to your appointed registration time, be sure you are able to access The Archway. Your username and password for your McDaniel email account and The Archway are the same.

To Register for classes:

  1. Go to "The Archway"
  2. Select "Log In”
  3. Select "Student Menu"
  4. Select "Register for Classes"

Registration options available:

  1. Search and Register for Sections
  2. Register for Preferred Sections
  3. Express Registration

Search and Register for Sections allows you to look at the classes available for a given term. You may "shop" and choose the classes you are considering for the given term. You may register for these classes if you are using this option at your appointed time.

This process may also be done before your appointed registration time and your chosen classes will be held in a “Preferred Sections” shopping basket. There is no guarantee these classes will be available at your appointed registration time.

You can further narrow your search at this point by selecting specific departments, instructors, etc.

If you wish to enroll in only one course and know the correct subject, course number, and section number, do the following:

  • Select the appropriate subject from the drop down menu in the "Subject" box
  • Enter the "Course Number"
  • Enter the "Section Number"

Register for Preferred Sections allows you to register for classes that you selected in the Search and Register for Classes process before your appointed registration time. The classes you selected will be in a “shopping basket” with no guarantee of the class(es) current availability.

Express Registration can be used if you know the exact class(es) and sections you want to select for registration. The option requires that you know the "course number" and "section number". One or multiple classes can be selected using Express Registration.

Alternatively, you can use a Synonym number that identifies the same information as the course section number. If you are using Synonyms, enter these synonyms in the column labeled for this purpose. The Synonym number can be found in the course section green highlighted information after the course number.

When using any of these options, please read and follow the directions on each page. If you need additional help, please click on the “HELP” button for additional information. Please be patient with the system and do not click multiple times. This will only cause the system to slow down and eventually abort the registration process.

If you are idle for 15 minutes, you will be logged off.  You will need to log back into The Archway to resubmit your registration.

Once you have completed your registration print your schedule in case there are questions about your registration. You will receive a confirmation email to your McDaniel email account, verifying that you have registered.

Waitlist
If a course has met capacity, you can add your name to the course waitlist.

If you would like to remove your name from a waitlist:

  • Select – Manage My Waitlist
  • Select – Remove from the drop down menu for the course waitlist that you want to be removed from.

Students will be notified, by email, prior to the drop/add period, if their name has been added to the class roster.

Other Information Available on Archway

  1. Course Descriptions

By clicking on the green highlighted area of a course, under Section Name and Title, you will see the college catalog course description, as well as pre-requisites.

  2. Program Evaluations

Program Evaluation allows you and your adviser to see an evaluation of your progress in satisfying the requirements of an academic program.

You can select either of the following:

    * Select current active programs by clicking on the appropriate check box.
    * Do a “what-if” evaluation by selecting another program offered that you are considering. With this evaluation, you can determine to what extent you have already satisfied the requirements needed.
Selecting and evaluating a “what-if” program does not indicate whether you meet the criteria for that program. Students should discuss changes to their major and/or minors with their adviser before completing a change of major/minor form in the Registrar's Office.

Note: Special Registrations thant cannot be made using on-line registration:
The following registrations will need to be completed in the Registrar's Office, during or after your appointed On-line Registration day and time.

                Audits
                Courses needing Instructor Permission
                Credit/Fail Grading Option
Independent Studies, Internships & Private Music Lessons above the 1000 level

STUDENTS MAY ONLY REGISTER FOR FOUR 4-CREDIT COURSES DURING REGISTRATION. IF YOU REGISTER FOR 5 OR MORE 4 CREDIT COURSES, RANDOMLY CHOSEN CLASSES, WILL BE DROPPED FROM YOUR SCHEDULE TO MEET THE FOUR 4-CREDIT LIMIT.

Once your registration has been entered, you should print a copy of your schedule from The Archway.

3.  AUDIT (Registration must be completed in the Registrar’s Office)

You may elect to audit a class with your adviser's and the instructor's approval. An audit is entered on your record as "AU" (no hours attempted, no hours earned, no quality points). The instructor sets the amount of participation required in the course, and failure to comply may result in your being dropped from the course. You may elect to audit a course by submitting an Add/Drop form to the Registrar's Office, requesting that grade method prior to the end of the regular add/drop period. Students who elect to switch from audit to credit and complete course requirements as assigned must make their decision prior to the end of the withdrawal period. You must submit an Add/Drop form, with your instructor and adviser's signature, to the Registrar's Office. PLEASE NOTE: There may be costs associated with auditing or changing from audit to credit please contact the Bursar's Office with questions.

4. Credit/Fail (Registration must be completed in the Registrar’s Office)

Students following the Basic Liberal Arts Requirement (BLAR) with JUNIOR or SENIOR standing may take one course a semester on a Credit/Fail option. You may elect to take a course Credit/Fail by requesting that grade method by completing an Add/Drop form prior to the deadline date for the semester and submitting it to the Registrar's Office. You may change from Credit/Fail to a letter grade up until the last day of classes of that semester. To do this, you must submit an Add/Drop form to the Registrar's Office. PLEASE NOTE: Classes required for majors, minors, or BLARs may NOT be taken Credit/Fail. Grades of "C-" or better will be recorded as Credit, while grades of "D+" or lower will be recorded as Fail.

5. Independent Studies/Internships (Registration must be completed in the Registrar’s Office)

In order to register for independent studies or an internship, you must complete a separate form, which can be obtained in the Registrar's Office. You will need to fill out the form and get the appropriate signatures. Generally, no more than 4 credits of independent study or internship should be taken in any one semester. The maximum number of internship credits applicable to graduation is 12 credits. Student Teaching and Social Work Field Instruction are considered internships. Any additional hours taken for credit will be added to the 128 hours required for graduation.  Registration forms are available in the Registrar's Office and on The Archway under "Undergraduate Information".

6.  Private Music Lessons - Level 2000, 3000, & 4000

Registration for private music lessons, above the 1000 level requires completion of the Private Music Lesson Registration Form which is available in the Registrar's Office, in the Music Department and on The Archway under "Undergraduate Information".

Schedule Changes During Registration

On-line registration will not be available from November 17th through November 30th, so that waitlists can be resolved.  Beginning on Monday, December 1st, until Sunday, January 25th, 2009, students will be able to make schedule changes by adding and dropping classes on-line.   After January 25th, an add form will need to be completed and signed by the professor teaching the class, as well as your advisor to add classes.  You will be able to drop classes online up until February 16th, 2009.

If you have difficulty accessing the Archway from your residence hall, you can use the computers in the labs on campus.

Mathematics Proficiency Exams

Students following the Basic Liberal Arts Requirement (BLAR) must show competency in both arithmetic and basic algebra as this is a requirement for graduation. Proficiency in both arithmetic and algebra is also a pre-requisite for many courses that apply to both the Basic Liberal Arts Requirement (BLAR) and McDaniel Plan. Math proficiency pre-requisites will be noted by each appropriate course.  The College catalog will also indicate the courses with the math proficiency pre-requisite.

If you need to satisfy one or both competencies for graduation and/or prerequisite completion for a course, and you are not currently in the Basic Mathematics (MAT1001) and/or Basic Algebra (MAT1002), you must register for the proficiency exams in the Registrar's Office prior to the exam date.

Math Proficiency dates are:

Tuesday, October 28,2008                             11:45am
Monday, January 26, 2009                             6:30pm
Tuesday, March 31, 2009                              11:45am

Prequisites

If you are taking a course this semester that is a prerequisite for a course you wish to take next semester, you may register for that course. If however, you do not satisfy the prerequisite (you drop the course, you fail the course, or you get an incomplete in the course), it is your responsibility to drop the course for which you've registered. You may also be dropped from a course, at the instructors request, if a prerequisite is not met. For all other cases in which you have not satisfied the prerequisite, you will not be able to register without the instructor's signature.

Repeating Courses

A course may be repeated and there is no limit to the number of repeats you may take. However credit for any course may only be earned once toward graduation. You will earn the quality points for the highest grade awarded on a repeated course. The lower grade will not be used in the determination of your grade point average. These regulations do not apply to performance music courses.

Student Course Load

The normal course load will be 4 courses (16 credit hours). In order to be considered full-time you must be registered for at least 12 credit hours. Anything less than 12 credit hours may jeopardize financial aid, athletic eligibility, room and board privileges, and insurance coverage under a parent's policy. If you register for more than 22 credit hours, except for private music lessons, there will be an additional charge of $962.00 per credit hour.

STUDENTS MAY ONLY REGISTER FOR FOUR 4-CREDIT COURSES DURING REGISTRATION. IF YOU REGISTER FOR 5 OR MORE 4 CREDIT COURSES, RANDOMLY CHOSEN CLASSES WILL BE DROPPED FROM YOUR SCHEDULE TO MEET THE FOUR 4-CREDIT LIMIT.

Student-Designed Majors and Minors

The option of a student-designed major/minor is available to students whose academic interest and goals canot be served by existing programs.  The initial process for a student-designed major/minor should be submitted to the Curriculum Committee by the end of the sophomore year.  To submit a proposal, students must obtain an adviser willing to oversee the entire program.  Proposal forms are available in the Registrar's Office.  Additional information regarding Student-Designed Major/Minor(s) appears in the College Catalog.
