- McDaniel College will award more than 400 bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the College’s 136th Commencement at 2 p.m. May 20 on campus in Gill Center. Speakers include Nora Roberts, author of more than 140 novels, and Jane Bryant Quinn, author of the best-selling books “Making the Most of Your Money” and “Everyone's Money Book.” They will each receive an honorary degree. » Full Story

- Student Research and Creativity Grants were awarded to 12 McDaniel students this academic year. The grants, ranging from $25 to $500, are intended to encourage special projects that complement students’ major academic emphases. A grant may cover for instance, the cost of materials or travel expenses. Here are the stories of two students who benefited from the grants in very different ways. Diego de los Rios ’06 used a travel grant to return to his native Bogota, Colombia to research the Sai Baba movement. - Many students have the opportunity to present original research at professional conferences worldwide during their college days at McDaniel. The presentations are frequently the culmination of independent study and faculty collaborations. - Debora Johnson-Ross (left), assistant professor of Political Science and International Studies, has been selected for a Fulbright Scholar Grant from the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) and the J. William Fulbright Scholarship Board. She will spend 10 months lecturing at the University of Buea in Cameroon in 2006-2007, where she will teach three courses. » Full Story

- Aaron Christman '05 and his wife Jennifer (left) are serving as Peace Corps volunteers in Madagascar. The Carroll County teachers left in February and will spend two years working on environmental projects on the African island. » Full Story

- Talk show host and McDaniel Trustee Diane Rehm (left), whose two-hour daily program The Diane Rehm Show has been a tradition for more than 25 years on public radio station WAMU in Washington, D.C., and distributed to NPR Member stations around the country since 1995, began broadcasting on the new NPR Berlin channel (104.1 FM) in Germany on April 3. Berlin and Brandenberg residents are able to join the global conversation live weekdays at 4 p.m. CET (10 a.m. ET) when the program’s first hour, devoted to critical news issues and analysis, opens the phone lines to listeners. » Full Story

4/11/2006 - Three scholars in religious studies will present an interfaith discussion, “The Clash of Religious Certainties: Understanding Ancient Texts Anew in a Contemporary World,” at 7 p.m. April 25 on campus in McDaniel Lounge. McDaniel’s Visiting Fulbright Scholar Dr. Muslih Tayo Yahya, the Reverend Dr. Christopher Leighton, and Rabbi Mark Loeb will participate in the dialogue centered on the Koran, the New Testament, and the Torah.
