Havens first emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early1960s and performed at Woodstock. His first hit single, “Here Comes the Sun,” hit Billboard’s Top 30 Chart. Havens, who uses music to convey messages of brotherhood and personal freedom, has released more than 25 albums.

The two-day American Music & Arts Festival also features Tom Chapin, Guy Davis, Scott Ainslie, Walt Michael & Co., and many others. In addition, the festival hosts a variety of popular visual artists and a children’s activities area.  Also on the grounds is an array of traditional and non traditional vendors. Festival goers may even camp out.

Common Ground on the Hill, established by alumnus, McDaniel artist-in-residence and recording artist Walt Michael ’68, seeks to bridge the cultural gap between people from diverse racial, ethnic, religious, age, and gender groups through traditional art and music.

It’s also not too late to register for one or both of the Common Ground Traditions Weeks, held July 2-7 and July 9-14 at McDaniel College. The summer courses, performances and activities range from learning the harmonica, fiddle, Celtic harp or guitar to studying African drumming or Latin Dance. Participants may learn juggling, yoga, knitting or woodturning. The program also boasts a Distinctive Lecture series and Nonviolence Institute forum. There are many other subjects and a full-scale children’s program. Dances and concerts will be held each evening and are open to participants and community members.
