Renowned director and playwright Moses Goldberg presents “Waiting for Godot,” at 8 p.m. Oct. 4-7 in McDaniel College’s WMC Alumni Hall.
The cast includes students Jess Behar ’07, Chris DeRose ’07, Andy Fleming ’10, Peter Kendall ’08 and Jack Rinn ’10.
Goldberg, an adjunct lecturer who is currently teaching a playwriting class, received in 2005 the Children's Theatre Foundation of America's prestigious Medallion Award for lifetime achievement in the field of Children’s Theatre. More than 25 of his plays have been produced professionally, and 10 have been published, including “Aladdin,” “The Outlaw Robin Hood,” “The Men’s Cottage” and “The Wind In The Willows.”
“Every time I sit in an audience at a play and see young people absorbed in the theatre, moving their bodies in sync with the hero of the play, that’s the biggest high I get,” Goldberg says. “That’s the magic of theatre.”
He spent 25 years as producing director of Stage One: The Louisville (Ky.) Children’s Theatre and has directed at theatres around the world, including the world premiere of Gennadi Mamlin’s “On The Edge” at Moscow’s famed Taganka Theatre.
Goldberg has long wanted to direct “Waiting for Godot,” calling it one of the very few plays that succeed in being both funny and tragic at the same time.
"This is a classic play, but not an easy play to perform. Our actors are demonstrating a lot of skill, and the show is going to be quite good,” he says.
Known as one of the theatrical masterpieces of the 20th century, the play by Samuel Beckett focuses on Vladimir and Estragon, two tramps who wait on a deserted road for the elusive Godot.
