Giving back to
The Latino community

Freshman Jasmin Chavez is headed for a busy summer between her prestigious Washington, D.C., internship and orchestrating her idea of a leadership and health day for at-risk sixth graders. But there’s no stopping this young Latina woman from giving back — and, even more importantly, from helping other Hispanic youth go to college and find success in life.


Chavez was recently chosen as one of four summer interns from across the country with the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. She’s also the recipient of a Griswold-Zepp Award from McDaniel to fund her Leadership Day for rising at-risk sixth graders from the Culmore neighborhood in her hometown of Falls Church, Va. Recent grad, Roger Isom Jr., was recognized by The Daily Record as one of 20 Maryland up-and-comers who are in their 20s.


The “20 in their Twenties” are chosen for professional accomplishment, civic involvement and impact of achievement. “The program celebrates the best and brightest under 30 who may have not earned their first million but whose creativity and spirit are already contributing to a new energy in Maryland,” according to The Daily Record.

Sorority celebrates 90 years of sisterhood

Sharing an alma mater,
A sorority and friendship

They arrived wearing big smiles and various shades of their hallmark color purple, eager to reconnect with classmates and to meet women from across the decades who not only share an alma mater but a sorority in common. The 90th anniversary celebration of Phi Alpha Mu marked a milestone for the College’s oldest — and only remaining — local sorority.


So much was still familiar, even to the women who graduated when female students had a curfew and were required to wear skirts. The purple cow is still the sorority’s mascot, and the purple pansy is its flower.
