The McDaniel College Department of Theatre Arts presents the musical comedy “Urinetown” at 8 p.m. Nov. 15-18 in WMC Alumni Hall.

“Urinetown” tells the story of a future civilization where a drought has overcome the earth, and people can only use public pay-toilets. When one man decides he’s had enough, he leads a revolution to freedom.

“The premise is ridiculous,” says Jessica Behar ’07, who plays Josephine Strong. “The concept is atrocious, and there isn't even a happy ending.  But it will definitely make you laugh, and hopefully think as well.”

Director Elizabeth van den Berg chose the production for its themes of ecological disaster, corporate corruption and corporate control of government, which she says are extremely relevant today.

“Theatre often reflects the politics of the time in which it was created, and this show is a perfect example of that,” she says.

In addition, the actors are involved in every aspect of the production: climbing scaffolding, moving set pieces and creating percussion effects in a dance number.

“This production is one of the most challenging and demanding shows done at McDaniel College,” says Tony Cimino ’07, who plays Caldwell B. Cladwell. “Not only are all the actors playing characters, but they are also running spotlights, spinning sets and working all the props.”

The cast includes Colleen Alford ’10, Jessica Behar ’07, Katie Bonaduce ’10, Ryan Brown ’08, Joe Byrd ’09, Meghan Carlton ’08, Tony Cimino ’07, Melvina Coker ’07, Katie Cooper ’09, Casey Crough ’10, Chris DeRose ’07, Jim Dyson ’09, Mary Kate Klocko ’09, Nina Kompanek ’09, George Moorehead IV ’09, Brett Myers ’10, Alex Neiman ’08, Albert Pero III ’04, Jon Teter ’08 and Amelia Vance ’10.

“Urinetown” won three Tony awards during its 2001-2004 run on Broadway.
