Certification Options

Elementary (MD teaching certification, grades K–8)
Prepares classroom teachers for elementary and middle school deaf students. Students complete the M.S., the internship in Deaf Education, and the Praxis Series Assessments.

Elementary/ASL Specialist (MD teaching certification, grades K–8)
Prepares classroom teachers to work with elementary/middle school deaf students, as well as with deaf students learning ASL as their first language, and hearing (and some deaf) students learning ASL as a second language. Students complete the M.S., internship in Deaf Education, DED:520 Counseling Parents of Deaf Children, DED:533 Methods of Teaching ASL: 1st and 2nd Language Instruction, DED:540 Advanced ASL Linguistics, DED:543 Assessing ASL Skills: 1st and 2nd Language Learners, DED:515 Literacy Connections through ASL Storytelling, ASL internship, and the Praxis Series Assessments.

Secondary (MD teaching certification, grades 6–12)

Literacy Specialist (MSDE Reading certification)
Prepares literacy specialists to work with deaf and hard of hearing children (grades K–12) to develop reading and writing competence.
